In his presentation on the Design and Development of Power and Throughput Efficient Integrated Systems next week on October 11th, Prof. Vladimir Stojanovic (MIT) will be addressing the critical item and developing area:

High-speed links: A new field in high-throughput, energy-efficient communications

The field of high-speed links is rapidly emerging as a field in desperate need for innovative band-limited communication system and circuit design. Very high throughputs (10s of Gb/s) make classical digital communication system design inefficient and link-specific noise sources make the classical performance analysis inaccurate. This talk describe the link system model as close as possible to the communications community and outline the main challenges in link system design.

The talk will first lay the background for link system design by providing link-specific noise and channel models. The talk will then describe recent breakthroughs in passive backplane design as well as give some predictions about the capacity of the typical backplane interconnect channels. By looking at the target interconnect applications, like 10-100 Tb/s routers, it is clear that both the data rate and power have to improve by an order of magnitude each, to achieve the design goal with manageable physical dimensions of the system. This means an improvement of two orders in magnitude in energy cost per bit, from current designs. There is the potential for emerging link design trends like multi-tone signaling and channel-and-circuit-aware coding to meet these challenges and fulfill this task.

Venue

The Boston Chapter of the IEEE Communications Society is sponsoring this meeting. It begins at 7 p.m. at Verizon Labs, 40 Sylvan Road, Waltham. All are welcome; there is no meeting fee. The meeting will be preceded by dinner at Bertucci's, Winter St, Waltham, at 5:30 p.m.

Directions to Bertucci's restaurant in Waltham:

Take Exit 27B on I95/128, heading west on Winter Street. After exiting, stay all the way to the right and take the first right turn into the shopping plaza. Bertucci's is at the far end of the plaza. Please let Paul Zorfass know if you plan to attend the dinner at Bertucci’s. Paul can be contacted at paul.zorfass@embeddedtrade.com.

Directions to Verizon Labs, 40 Sylvan Road, Waltham:

Take Exit 27B on I95/128, heading west on Winter Street. On exit, stay all the way to the right. Verizon Labs is 1/2 mile ahead. After the passing the second traffic light, turn left onto SYLVAN RD. toward the Verizon campus. After entering the campus, take the second right into the courtyard parking lot (go under the pedestrian overpass between buildings and go left for parking). Move diagonally on the walkway to enter building #1 at the northeast corner of the courtyard.

The talks are normally held in Auditorium B. Entering building #1 from the courtyard entrance, go past the guard's desk on the right, and past the cafeteria entrance on the left, then turn left down a corridor behind the cafeteria. Go past Auditorium A, on the right, to Auditorium B, also on the right.
